War film

Does anyone recognise this film from the following details: it's WWII and in the run-up to D-Day, the Brits dump a corpse dressed as a British Army officer in the sea off Spain, chained to a briefcase full of forged secret plans. The idea is to mislead the Germans over plans for an Allied landing, and the plan is successful. It's apparently based on a true story. My grandad was telling me about it the other day, but in true pensioner style couldn't remember what it was called. And if you have seen it, is it any good?

Off -topic, but a great film about the Allied invasion plans and German attempts to uncover them is 36 Hours, starring James 'Rockford Files' Garner. Not, as far as I know, based on a true story, but an excellent film nonetheless!

The event pictured in the film 'The Man who Never was' was true. The plan was to deceive the nazis about the invasion of Sicily by leading them to believe the invasion would happen in Greece.

The plan was completely succesful. The body was buried in Spain.

I've saw the film a long time ago and its good, but I believe there was a more recent TV programme about it.

The film was inspired by a book of the same name by Ewen Montagu who was the intelligence officer in charge of the operation. A new edition of the book is available and can be found on Amazon.co.uk
