If a private residence is used as a company's registered office will it be classed as a business for local rates?

I hope not
Not as far as I'm aware - a registered business address is an admin procedure. So long as the business isn't actually carried on there you should keep your residential banding. And using a room in the house to do your accounting etc doesn't normally change the use to business either.

And dzug you can now relax!.
As others have indicated, simply using a residential address as the registered office of a limited company doesn't mean that you'll pay business rates.

If any part of the residence is used as an office (or for other business purposes) you should read this:

(In particular, click on the 'View examples' link to get an idea of when the Valuation Office thinks that it would be appropriate to charge business rates).
