21 down (`family's line for right descent') is either `brood' or `blood' but I can't quite work out why it should be the one as opposed to the other -- couldn't it be read either way? Thanks! Katherine

the clue is telling you to substitute L for R (line for right) - so it's BLOOD.

Thanks for this, I'm sure you're right but I can't quite see why the clue couldn't equally be telling us `if you were to put line for right you'd get descent' which would make it `brood'? Best, Katherine
I agree Katherine. It could be read that way - but I don't think it should be.
The first reference is Family( Brood), you then replace R with L. Blood.
PS: Blood line is descent.
