Is anyone else annoyed by the price of trains?? I'm planning for my boyfriend and me to go and visit my sister, this is 2 months away but there are no cheap advance tickets available, and the normal return price is 70 each. If I drove it would take 3 hours and cost about 40 between us return. Why would anyone get the train? I would much rather get the train as don't enjoy driving long distances, but who can afford to just throw their money away like this? It makes me sick the government harp on about using public transport, but it is SO expensive why would anyone unless they had to?
Makes me sad that I want to get public transport but I just can't afford to! How messed up is that?

Rail travel can be ridiculously expensive. You could try National Express, it may be a longer journey but you might get a good deal. Their website is fairly user-friendly.
National Express is fantastic! I would use them anytime over a train.
Sure as Harriet stated it takes longer. But it's so much cheaper! My partner and I used to have a long distance relationship and we used to catch the Coventry to London Victoria bus a lot.
He once got a Coventry to london return for 2!
Excellent deal ChocolatChip but did the long distance blossom!! lol

I think they have some 1 deals at the moment!
You may be lucky Emu2005
you say you have checked the return fare. i know this sounds a bit weird, but have you checked for single fares instead? i tried this and managed to save about 20
I don't find the price of the trains to bead to be truthful. When i went to Wales with an open ticket it cost me 45.00 which i thought was great and recently i travelled to Lancashire for 44.00 return.
If I travel from Leicester to Birmingham i pay 7.90 and yet for me to catch a bus into the city of Leicester (a 7 min journey, max) it costs me 3.00 return!

I once looked into travelling using national expres, and a 3 1/2 hour train journey was going to take me 9 hours and was the same price :-/

Where are you travelling to and from Emu?
i agree, the price is rediculous, have you tried to take coach instead?sometimes you can find really good deals.

I have looked at the single fares, that's where I find the advance fares but despite it being 2 months away they just don't have any of the cheap ones. I'm going from Nottingham to Southampton, I think it costs a lot because you go through London. The drive will be awful, but to spend 140 between us when petrol will be 40 just seems madness.

I've just had a look on National express, it would be 40 each, but take 7 hours.

Driving it is then!
