Henry VIII married Catherane of Arrogan in order to gain an allegence of England and Spain via marriage - H diveorced her, setting up the C of E, in 1533, he had lost interest in being friends with spain and set up the C of E.

In 1533, he married a pregnant Anne Boleyn, who gave birth to , Elizabeth (later Elizabeth I of England), three months later. Hate to be picky, but the term was 'Flanders mare' - a reference to Anne of Cleaves' country of origin.

Henry was a wilful selfish unpleasant man who combined his 'duty' with his own ambitions and selfishness, largely because he could - being the monarch in those days was a whole different ball game than trotting along and reading a speech wrtten for you, and a broadcast on Christmas day.

In Henry's day what you said, went!
I am not sure why this question is under Music. Anyway.

While people think Henry went from woman to woman every 5 minutes few remember that he was married to his first wife for about 24 years (1509 to 1533).

Remember we had had years of wars (war of the roses) before his father came to the throne (Henry 7th) so it was VITAL to have a son to carry on the line of succession or there would have been more wars.

It was only when his first wife failed to give him a male heir (after over 20 years of trying) did he try to divorce her.

And one of his wives died in childbirth, which is hardly his fault, and another one outlived him.
