Must admit, i don't actually know if this works or not - but it looks great fun!

Thank you FluffyFairy I will give that a try.

Thanks yinyang but I think we will put up with the wedges instead of paying out !!!!
Turning the loaf onto its side, you can set the knife at the correct position top & bottom of the slice before starting the cut.

Another helpful suggestion - many thanks
Let the knife do the work. Try not to push down with the knife as you cut (stupid as that sounds), it'll work it's own way as it saws through the loaf. Also, make sure the bread knife you're using is plenty big enough for the size of loaf!

Thank you
Buy an electric knife !
I can't slice bread either..my old electric knife conked and I was panicking as I hate sliced pap so I bought a cheap and cheerful one from Argos ..brilliant .Nice even slices any thickness you want .Light and easy to use .
Turning the loaf on it's side is the way to go..

Yes I might have a look at that - as long as they are not dangerous !!!!

I saw a good tip for buttering bread - (once you've mastered the slicing.) Butter the uncut loaf, then slice your piece of bread. Much easier than buttering a fresh piece of sliced bread which tends to 'tear'...
the lakeland device works well with homemade bread and a good sharp breadknife. A lot of the problem tends to be a blunt knife, which as it gets blunter tends to cut round corners because one side is sharper than the other. Ask anyone using a chainsaw that needs filing or bowling an old cricket ball with shine on one side only, as it is same effect.
I agree with cutting the bread on it's side. Also, cutting bread that is slightly frozen gives an even slice. Electric knives are good!

I have just cut the bread by placing it on its side - and it has worked !!!
Many thanks to you all
Lots of good answers above but also buy a good bread knife with a rigid blade so that it doesn't bend as you cut the bread.

Also, I bought a breadmaker a a month ago (Panasonic SD254 from Amazon). Brilliant homemade bread. I won't be buying from the shops again.
