this was sent to me - 3 men go into a hotel. the man behind the desk said the room is 30, each man paid 10 and went to the room. a while later the man behind the desk realized the room was only 25 so he sent the bellboy to the 3 guys' room with 5. on the way the bellboy couldn't figure out how to split 5 evenly between 3 men, so he gave each man a 1 and kept the other 2 for himself. this meant that the 3 men each paid 9 for the room, which is a total of 27, add the 2 that the bellboy kept = 29. where is the other pound ? it's doing my head in. can anyone work it out?x

What other pound?

man behind the desk = 25
bellboy = 2
men = 3

The men paid 8.3333333 each not 9.

There is no missing pound. This is asked almost every 2 or 3 days here.

I'm crying now!!!!x :-(
It's the way the question is worded that is the tricky part.

It's like saying 20 men club together and pay 200 for a DVD player. The shopkeeper realises that the DVD is only 1 and gives 199 to his errand boy to give back. The errand boy can't be bothered so gives them each 1 and pockets 180.

This means the men have paid 9 each which is a total of 180, the shopkeeper has 1 and the bellboy kept 180 making 361. Wahay they just made an extra 161 from nowhere.
you would think katie had shot someone :)
That's a lot to pay for a DVD player, you can get one in ASDA now for 14.99
Aye that's why the shopkeeper realised it was only 1 :-)
