Nurse Uniform (Embaressing Question)
9 Answers
Hi! I've finally plucked up the courage to apply to Uni and do Nursing.
The only thing that's held me back...and I know this is STUPID...but I'm worried about the uniforms. I'm a big girl, size 24, and I'm worried that they won't have any student nurse tunic's big enough. Or whether patients thinks they shouldn't take advice off a 'fat nurse' as she's ovbiously not healthy. I'm trying to lose weight but it's hard as I have PCOS, but I hope to have lost some by the time I start, if I get a place that is!
Basically, can anyone put my mind at rest?

What makes you feel that size matters in nursing?
It is a vocation and if you have the qualities to be a good nurse believe me, size is NOT an issue.
Put the size issue to the back of your mind - you might think that is easy for me to say but I am about size 18 .
You go for it and don't let anyone or anything stand in your way.
Size is no dictator of your qualities or abilities, so don't let it control your future. Have confidence and be positive.
Good luck x

They will have a uniform big enough don't worry. I did my training 6 years ago and was big. Stupidly I let pride get in the way and only ordered a size 18 uniform which needless to say squashed my boobs and left me gasping for breath at the end of a shift. It was difficult to move too. As long as you are comfotable who cares what size you are. When you start that first placement and realise what a difference you are making everything else pales into insignificance.
I never let being the "fat nurse" get in my way I genuinly feel that I have the respect of my colleagues and patients beacuse I care and I am good at what I do. If yuor heart is in it the rest will follow.
If you need any more advice let me know. It is probably one of the most scary things you will ever do but believe me it is so worth it. Good luck x

Aww your replies are so sweet I feel like crying (in a good way!) I've been worried about it for so long! I mean, if I get a place I'll start in September and that gives me a good 8 months to lose some weight, plus now I have a goal or reason to lose it all the more :)
I really really hope I get a place, it's what I want to do more than anything and it's taken this long to bite the bullet and go for it!
Thank You again for all your supportive replies, they mean a lot!

UPDATE - I got an interview but I didn't get a place. So unbelievably gutted. I wanted this so much, but I just wasn't good enough. I honestly can't see what I did that was so wrong. I'm (embaressingly) close to tears as I type this. I just want to help people, but they didn't like me, so no place. :o(
I even lost 2 and a half stone to fit into the nurses uniforms, but it was a waste of time. I might as well go to the pub for a slap up meal, and eat loads. What's the point? I'm good for nothing.
