The clios year of make is 2000 and the engine wont turnover. A mechanic said I needed a new key. Renault said they want 145 !!!!!! for a new key. Is there anything I can try before I fork out for a new key.
Have you tried pressing the key once you're in the vehicle, to lock the doors. Then press again to unlock them, then try starting again within 30 seconds, otherwise the immobiliser will cut in)
I had a key that required replacing. Some keys can be cut by shops and coded but not all. It was for a Nissan and was quoted as 95, which for a van I thought ridiculous. I had it cut anyway and then managed to put the new key blade into the old holder/bleeper/chip holder. Worked a charm. I don't understand why a Clio key should be so expensive. Perhaps you could look online for an alternative supplier?
The only way to get a new key for a Renault is from renault.
Before you do that don't rely on one mechanics diagnosis, it could be something a lot cheaper, just damp in the electrics, it's worth having a diagnostic check with Renault.
An independent auto locksmith will be able to cut and program a new key far cheaper than the dealer. Still likely to be 80 - 100 though. What area are you in?
Again, not sure if this is definitely the problem.
In your book is a code and how to work it. It disarms the immobiliser as my step dad and my friends mom had this problem. Follow the procedure and if it doesn't work go to reno. Being 2000 model they can tell you the code. Order a key put leave no money else they wont give you the code for your car. Get home and start car. Phone reno and cancel key order this is what we did and your key still works as all you have done is disarmed the electronics in the key.
