I've been prescribed som penicillin for tonsilitus (sp) but I've also been taking paracetamol and Ibuprofen with it as throats still quite painful. It doesn't say anywhere on the leaflets that I shouldn't do this and this is what I was doing to control the pain before the prescription but I think it's a lot of tablets to take and it doesn't seem entirely sensible. Does anyone know if this is ok before I start bothering NHS Direct?
Also, I've got a prescription for dianette as well to take primarily for PCOS but it's a possibility I'll also use it for contraception. I know I have to take it on the first day of my period but if that comes while I'm on pencillin it won't be as effective will it?
(Sorry, I know I should have asked the doctor this yesterday morning but I just wanted to get out and go back to bed!)
I'm a nurse. You can safely take parecetemol, ibuprofen and penicillin together. It seems like alot but you need to control your pain. We combine drugs like this alot in hospital. However, as correctly stated, a broad spectrum antibiotic like penicillin could reduce the effectiveness of your pill. Don't chance it. You'll need to use a condom whilst you are taking your pencillin and for a further 7 days after you've stopped taking it.
