Reinstall missing files

Hi can anyone help, a couple of nights ago i was backing up my Toshiba L10 Notebook (laptop) when a shelf holding a printer fell on top of it and was hit by the printer and shelf causing no damage to the screen or the chassy but it did knock the cover of the dvd drive. windows was still working but very slow and then started to constantly freeze, which with reluctance i turned the machine off. Now when i try to boot into widows it takes a while to load to the black screen with the windows logo (blue or green bar scanning below it) then after the screen goes black and after several minutes a blue stop error screen appears saying "this application failed to start because csrsrv.dll was not found re-installing may fix this problem" I took the computer to pc world who told me to try and reinstall the file from a windows xp disk. when i put the disk in and boot from it the windows setup screen with 3 options, install windows xp, repair windows xp or quit. when i press R a black screen and command promt appears c:\windows it then asks me what do i want to login as so i type c then a message asking for an administrator/ administrative password comes up. i've contacted toshiba and they were no help. please can anyone help me to reinstall this file or know the password or if there is a way i can access it just to back it up as i still have data on the system and i don't want to lose it by doing a recovery if i can just replace a file. i've also tried booting into safe mode but i get the same stop error screen. Please help!!!

You are choosing the wrong option when booting from the CD. It's confusing, I know, but in order to perform a repair installation, you don't choose "Repair", you choose "Install". Later in the process, it will detect that Windows is already installed and offer the option to perform a Repair.

The Repair option that you are choosing is designed for experts and gives access to a command prompt. At that point the average user will have no idea what to do next!

Sorry, I should have also mentioned that I very much suspect that your hard disk has been physically damaged, and you may find that the installation fails, in any case. :-(

hi I must agree with rojash here I too strongly suspect HD damage and be warned if you do a repair install any updates not on your installation disk will have to be re-downloaded
if you want to use recovery console try leaving the password blank and just hit enter or try putting in your own password (if you have one) failing that there are password readers available on the net
if you do manage to get into recovery console at the prompt type

copy c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386\csrsrv.dll c:\windows\system32

the above is all one line with a space in between dll and c:\
failing that you can get the file here

put this on a floppy or cd then type:

copy X:\csrsrv.dll c:\windows\system32

NOTE X = the drive letter of the drive you put csrsrv.dll onto
