how can you find out when a relative dies who their life insurance was with.

Are there no policy documents to be examined.
Might a reference to direct debit payments give some help.

Thanks, it was actually my father who died @ 83 a few months ago and we think that there should be somewhere a paid up policy but we can't find any reference. wondered if there was a central reference anywhere.
