I've got my driving test on Friday, but have a pants driving instructor who seems to know next to nothing (for instance, he says it's better to drive 37mph than 27mph in a 30 zone!).

Anyway, my question is, when parallel parking, what is the required distance to be parked from the curb? One friend tells me it's half a door width, another says it's 12 inches. Please help!

The rules only state 'a reasonable distance'. This is usually interpreted as 30cm, as in this web page from a driving school:

However, unless there are signs to indicate otherwise, council parking staff can't issue a parking ticket unless your vehicle is more than 50cm from the kerb.

you must be within 18inch from the curb when you have finished your manover. Dont forget If you are not within that on your first attempt you are allowed to pullout a little and adjust your position . as that is what you would do on your own if you were parking your car to go to the shop,s etc Ps tell your friend that my car door is nearly 5ft long so they are saying that you are allowed to park 2.5 feet away from the curb???? PPS are you sure that you didnt just miss hear your instructor 30 mph to be on the safe side= 27 t0 29.9 mph .Im a instructor 25yrs
Asking about parking is the least of your worries with an instructor like yours, if he's as bad as you say cancel your test and get some proper instruction.

Thanks for your answers, although I'm still confused. Is it a foot or 18 inches?

Dustypuss, he most definitely said 37mph, because I asked him to repeat himself! He reckons he used to be an examiner, but I find that hard to believe. Fortunately I've had lessons before him and have plenty of common sense, so I should still have a reasonable chance of my test on Friday - although you can never be sure! I won't be canceling my test though Toureman.

i y ou have the skill put it 6in from the curb . as long as you dont hit it you cannot be to close . if he said 37mph you will fail as you are braking the law . if you were doing 37mph and was stoped by the police wether you was on test or not you would get a fine and points. ask to see his green adi licence make sure it is in date that is if he has one .should be in the windscreen of his car
I agree with Dustypuss & Toureman, this "instructor" sounds a complete dingbat.
my young lady failed to day . guess what 27 mph in a 30 mph . strange coincidence but true
ava77 HOW did you get on with your test
