Just as a matter of interest "the butterfly effect" does not properly refer to time travel. Or at least not soley.
It refers to the sesnitivity to initial conditions found in non-linear dynamics (Chaos theory to you and I)
The original example was that a butterfly's wingbeat in New York could cause a storm in London.
The idea got somewhat muddled with Ray Bradbury's short story "the sound of thunder" where a butterfly was killed in the past affecting the future (Lampooned nicely by the Simpsons).
This then got picked up by the time-travelling film "the butterfly effect"
