When me moved in to our house there was a card meter and we paid approx 40 p/month, we changed the meter asap (it's free to do) and we now pay by direct debit and it's less than 20 p/month.
When it was pre pay meter it was British Gas, and when we changed to direct debit we went with Southern Electric so using a different company may also have led to the drop in cost.
Patricia, check it out with your electric provider. Here in Scotland if you have a card meter it costs something extra per unit. Thats per unit which, when multiplied by the number of units you use, is quite substantial. We spoke to the electric man and asked him about a meter and he said 'it only costs 1p a unit more', we asked how much a unit cost and he said '10p', so by our calculations that equated to 10% extra to have a meter. Definitely worth asking around.
