highest rate mobility allowance.
13 Answers
Hiya. My ex boyfriend has just been given this without the Care Component of DLA. He has very serious ME and from cycling 20 miles a day to and from his previous farming job, he now has to walk with a walking stick. I could cry for him.
Anyway, with this allowance, does this now make him disabled, would he be able to apply for a Disabled Rail/Coach Card, Cheaper Bus Pass and or an Orange Badge to park. ?
Many thanks.

Parking,
With the Blue Badge, (no more Orange ones), you can park on single yellow lines, (but read the parking notices), If he gets a Motorbility car, (which we have),all the info he needs comes with it.
As for the Rail etc, go down to the Booking office and ask, there are some concessions, but they vary,
If there's anything else you'd like to know, just ask.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies.
Lonnie, is there anything else he may be able to claim with getting the high rate mobility allowance ?
Thanks so much. He is one of these that WILL NOT ask for ANYTHING and I literally had to FORCE him to sign his SSP forms, and the DLA Form. He maintains that other folk might need it more. The fact is is that he is very very ill and I have never known ANYONE SO SOUL DESTROYED. It was a major contributing factor to our break up but we remain the best of friends and I would do ANYTHING to help him right now. So if you know of anything else that he may be able to claim that would be fantastic to know about.
Please don't think that he is a scrounger of any sort, in the beginning he kept trying to go back to work but kept collapsing.
Many Many thanks to everyone for all of your help and support. It is truly appreciated.

Yes Donna. One of my good friend's has ME, and qualifies for the higher Mobility Allowance, which enables her to get a car. This may depend on the severity of the condition though. My friend spends most of his time immobile. He can't even raise his arms sometimes, to wash his hair, and much of his life is spent in pain and isolation.
Good luck with any claim.

Why is he not getting the care component? Did he apply and was refused? If so tell him to appeal.I had to appeal for the whole of my claim,I was refused for all of it at first then awarded lowest rate of care and highest of mobility.I have emphysema and have been told by my doctor that it is doubtful I will live beyond another 10 years due to the severity of the lung damage. The DLA sent a doctor out to examine me and he said that I had greatly understated my condition on the form and that is why I was turned down at first.I got back pay from the original date of my claim(over 1000.00-which is what paid for the PC I am on now).
As to entitlemant to other benefits.... he should be entitled to income support if he's not working, housing benefit and council tax benefit. He may also be entitled to direct payments through the Social Services in his area for any help services needed around the home(home help or carers). The DWP are not allowed to take into account the DLA when working out the amount of any other benefit as it is a non-taxable benefit.

Dear Daffy and Ice Maiden. Hiya, my name is actually Katie although Donna Kebab is my nick name lol due to the amount of them I used to force feed myself with prior to my gastric band surgery. It is nice to speak with you all. I appreicate your kindness and efforts to reply to me.
Thank you SO VERY MUCH for your valued support and advice.
Right Daffy, bear in mind that I SENT FOR AND COMPLETED THESE FORMS FOR HIM and literally had to threaten him to sign them and motivated him into doing so by way of telling him that HE WAS NOT ABLE TO GET ABOUT AND CYCLE MILES UPON MILES anymore and to get it psychologically RIGHT OUT OF HIS HEAD that even the DSS Doctor that he had to see for his Incapacity benefit said he would more or less never be the same again. I understand that ME is a very very grave illness, when physically you are unable to do the normal day to day things in life yet mentally you still want to do them. He is SO FRUSTRATED but gradually coming around to it.

He was refused the care component (even though I have begged him to appeal) because he lives with his parents again now, who I must state are elderley, live in a Bungalow, his dad has severe cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy at the moment and his mum has had a stroke god bless them). When completing the form I told the DLA that at times he was so unable to go to the loo that he would use a bottle and then 'oike' it out of the window. I put exactly that !
When awarding him the highest rate component of mobility because now he has to rely on taxis etc to get him to the shops etc because he is virtually unable to walk more than 50 footsteps without the need to sit down AND he also now uses a walking stick. They have told him that he should be able to prepare a meal for himself, (although his elderley Mum does it for him) from scratch, bath himself, dry himself and so on.
Some days he cannot even get out of bed and at Christmas he laid on my sofa for 17 days with his eyes closed.
In October he was on his way to see me (he lives in the South West and me in Lancashire) and half an hour into the journey he collapsed, lost all his bodily controls (I think you know what I may mean there) and had to stop the journey by coach. He has been often too tired to speak to me or even text me and it has been somewhat soul destroying for us both because we were so very much in love). His disabilitys have driven him to the point of no hope and so to get him to appeal is a no go at the moment. (He thinks he is getting enough (and I quote his own words) 'free money' as it is.

His claim has been backdated from last November which gives him enough to buy a computer now which is what he desires to give him a little more drive in life) to the outside world of farming, hiking and angling that he used to live for. Perhaps you could help us there by advising us what the best package would be for him to go out and buy. I myself have a Dell whole package including the all in one printer and am on BT Broadband 24.99 a month package which gives us 8 mb I think and 80 television channels (which I still dont know how to plug in lol). My little girl is constantly on MSN so the 24.99 a month is a bargain for us both and money well spent.
thank you again to all for all your VERY VALUED help and support.
Best Wishes.

I know you said you had to nag him to apply at all but it seems like you may have to nag him again to appeal. From what you say he is entitled to the care component. If he cannot prepare and cook a meal then he should get it. It doesn't matter if he is getting this help now or that his parents are elderly and he lives with them. I live with my able bodied fiance and 10 year old son but they still awarded it to me on appeal. I sometimes wonder if they automatically deny any claim made to them (unless the person has terminal cancer) and then hope that people are too scared or put off to appeal. He is entitled and should definitely be getting the care component!
once again i must agree with daffy i was told by a benefits adviser that virtually noone gets the care component first time. with my mother i had to appeal twice and she got it. its a terrible state of affairs when you think how the system is abused by some but those in need have to almost beg. keep at it though.
