The police say you are 5 times more likely to be stabbed if you carry a knife than if you don't.

Now without fear of pointing out the bleeding obvious, is this just a politically correct way of saying that most people (predominantly black peasant youth from London) who are stabbed are rotten eggs themselves?

Yes, I am fully aware that completely innocent people are occassionally stabbed and shot (Stephen Lawrence springs to mind) and all those poor souls merely protected their family or property, but is it fair to say by rewording the initial statement that 80 perecnt of victims are scumbags?

I think this statement would be better used by Police to the uneducated general public, because the fear of crime far out does the actual crime rate.

This is where you have to be careful of using statistics the wrong way.

Maybe it is not the actual CARRYING the knife that causes them to be stabbed.

Maybe it is because they are in the sort of gangs who are more likely to get into fights. Or they live in certain towns or areas where you are more likely to get stabbed.

It is a bit like saying people who carry an umberella on holiday in the lake district are 5 times more likely to fall down a mountain than those that go on holiday to East Anglia.

It is not because they are carrying an umberalla that makes them more likely to fall down the mountain.
You must be more likely to become a victim of a knife attack if you mix with people who carry knives, or frequent places where knives are commonly carried. My mum used to say 'you're judged by the company you keep', and I believe that's true.
I've watched Crocodile Dundee a number of times and would like to disagree.

Ha! Very good, Booldawg. I wouldn't mind being in his company! He's the exception to the rule.
If you go into a fight tooled up you've got to use it. To flash it about and hope you scare the other party away does'nt work (as the statistics show).
I don't carry a knife, although I was caught up in a knife fight in January which was the 3rd time I'd come across a knife but the 1st time I've seen one used, I don't run with those sort of people I just have to deal with them via work. From what I've heard off people who've been stabbed or witnessed stabbings, is you don't see the knife, it's that quick. Stab, stab, stab and off they run.
I don't care if you SAY you're carrying a knife for protection, you belong in jail if you're caught with one.
So !..........carry your knife Safely!!
