have they ruined music over the last ten years? its the bands of genuine quality that never see the light of day that i feel sorry for and the charts is now a joke will music ever recover?

eemmm...Yes and Yes...constant cover version and real musicians demoted to the role of session musicians....Having said that there are still some good bands out there but the charts themselves are now 90% bland pop.

Boy bands have been around since at least the 70's (if not earlier), Osmonds, Jacksons, Bay City Rollers.

I believe that alot of the record buying public buy songs on the strength that, they like that particular tune and don't read too much into it. How many questions have there been on this website asking "who did it originally"?

It does annoy me that a fabricated band can acheive more success (albeit short term) than a band formed by proper musicians.

What annoys me more are fabricated bands that are manufactured to appear like proper bands, Busted, McFly etc.

I'm going for a sit down in a darkened room !!

There are some amazing young musicians about who are completely demoralised by the popularity of today's so called bands.  Yes, I agree Busted and McFly, etc. are completely fabricated - it makes me cringe to hear people calling them real musicians because they hold a guitar on stage and can just about hold a chord.

There is a huge amount of cr@p out there but it does sell - which is it's job and without any type of music I would be out of a job.  But as it is always said music isn't what it used to be. I must admit every nmow and then you will get a gem of an artist or group that outshine the rest but it is rare.

Thing is, there is still a lot, and I mean a LOT of good music out there. You just need to get away from the Top 40 mentality and explore a bit. Go and visit www.epitonic.com for example, or subscribe to one of the less mainstream music mags - preferably one that gives away free cover CDs - and see what you can find.

littleoldme is right. There's loads of good music out there, all you gotta do is look for it. It's a shame that a lot of people only hear the music that the record companies are marketing. Look at Usher for fcuk sake - what crap. The record companies are there to make money, they don't encourage their signings to deviate from a working formula that appeals to a majority. So a music fashion is marketed to the point of exhaustion. Look at house music, for instance. At the start it was experimental and interesting, now all you hear is the same tired old formula that the likes of Judge Jules endorses. And too many covers, what's the point of covering a song if it sound the same or worse?
