The tourist industry was built up after the Second World War under the Franco regime, which certainly represented a change from the previous Republican administration. Most recently, the government changed after the last election, but it's probably too soon to assess the impact of this on tourism.
Since the death of fascist dictator Franco, there has been more political freedom and individual liberty. For example, under Franco (at least in the 1960s) it was illegal for a female tourist to wear a bikini on the beach, which she could do at home in Britain. In the 1970s there were still many restrictions on what Franco saw as 'lewd' behaviour such as snogging in public. Franco was all for tourism, but upheld what he thought were high moral principles. This had a bad effect on British women because Spanish men, whose own women were limited to what they could do or show in public, thought British women were 'easy prey' in their summer skirts.
