Our local WH Smtih has an entire section devoted to this type of book! I think they call it 'Life Drama' or something like that.

Personally I think devoting a separate section to books about abused children and inventing a genre for it is seriously sinister, but then, I don't sell books for a living.
Dave's brother, Richard, has also written a book, called A Brother's Story, that you might enjoy.

There's also Kevin Lewis' The Kid.

Andy, I know what you mean. The trade jargon for them is 'misery' and I tend not to subscribe to these titles any more. You're right, there is a huge market in the genre and I'm not sure it's all for the right reasons. I know that authors generally see very little of the retail price of their books, most of it going to the middle men. One person salvaging some success from a hitherto miserable life is one thing, but publishers and sellers making ten times as much from someone else's misery doesn't sit too happily with me.

Grandmaof4, I have no problem with you reading these titles at all, don't think that for a minute, but I know you'd make me happier if you borrowed them from a library. A) I work for libraries, and B) whilst libraries pay for lending rights on the books, of which the writers get (again) a small percentage, at least it means no-one's having to produce yet another copy. That's better for the environment too. :-)
yeah there are dozens of the creepy things. I'm with you Andy it is sinister
David Pelzer wrote 2 sequels. I can't remember the titles.
I'll look for the brother's book. My students introduced me to 'A child called It" Quite remarkable that he survived and through help has had a productive life.
the other two books by Dave Peltzer are 'The Lost Boy' and ' A Man named Dave'.

Have a look here for similar style books: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Child-Called-Dave-Pelz er/sim/0752837508/2/ref=pd_sexpl_esi

I agree with andy and saxy though - I find these books a bit creepy. While I don't negate the experiences of these people, I'm a bit disturbed by the deluge of recent books seemingly jumping on the bandwagon.
Sickened: The True Story of a Lost Childhood

About a girl whose mother has Munchausen by Proxy

A Peice of Cake
by Cupcake Brown
It's a truly inspirational story by Cupcake who, after losing her mother aged 9(ish I can't quite remember), ends up in foster care and lives a life of abuse (sexual, physical and mental), drug addiction, prostituion, gang membership, etc. Yet managed to turn her life around and is now an attorney (barrister?) in the US, and a very successful business woman.
This might give you more of an idea whether you'd like to read A Peice of Cake or not:
