Renting References? will it go thru x

Hi
Has anyone ever been refused a rental property because of references?
I have lived in 2rental properties and always paid my rent on time i had no probs with prev landlords, however i am now in quite a bit of debt which i have missed payments from approx july2007 i have a full time job tho.
what are my chances of references going thru x

If they do a credit check that may swing there oppinion.

If they see you as a bad risk.
