Why does my car stall everytime I stop??

I have a 1985 Ford Mustang, 4cldr automatic. Everytime I come to a stop, my car just cuts out. No jerking or anything, it just dies. I notice lately sometimes when I turn corners it does the samething. When I'm on the HWY, it runs like a champ! When I restart the car, it starts up with no problem, however, when the car is warm it will just die again if I don't quickly put it into gear and take off. I've noticed when I started having this problem, my gas mileage went from 19 miles per gallon, to about 9-10 miles per gallon. Not only does this frustrate me, but worries me. This can't be good on my starter, or any other engine part. If someone has a logicial idea of why my car is doing this I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks!!

has your mustang got fuel injection. if it as then it sounds like you have a problem with your tick over contol unit this is an electronicly controlled unit and you will find it attached to the fuel inlet manifold,sounds like it's probably worn out and needs replacing.

When was the last time you had it serviced? It sounds like it needs it.

Thank you, tonyav, shylock73, bluesman8998 for taking the time to respond to my question reguarding my car dilemma. I have new tires (as of Jan. 17, 2008). I had my car serviced about 8 months ago. It has a feedback carb. (not fuel injected).
