The analogy used throughout the Bible, of God as Parent and human beings as children is a good one. What kind of parent wants to see their children suffer, but what kind of parent wants to restrict their children to such a degree that they never become truly independent? There is a view that we give our children only two things of real value - roots and wings. Imagine the depths of despair that a parent must feel to reach the point where they wish that their child had never been born? Do I blame my mother and father for having me, for raising me as best they knew how, for equipping me, however inadequately, for adult life? Do I look backwards in criticism, or do I accept that my life is mine to make, mend or mar?
Why does God let evil happen? Well why do we? My taxes pay for the roads and the police. My votes elect the government. I walk away from local and national politics and show no interest in questions of availibility of alcohol, severity of sentencing or rehabilitation of offenders apart from mouthing off in the pub. Then the daughter of a friend is mown down by a drunken motorcyclist who kills himself in the process. Is it logical at such a point to even frame the question - 'why did God let it happen?'
Apples fall downwards, time goes forwards, sh*t happens. We are all born, we all die. We are judged on what we do with in between.
