Looks sort of like a tapered test tube, and before you ask, no, I can't remember what you fill it with! I think it is a special fluid rather than diesel. This sort of pre- starting system is no longer put on new trucks. The joys of owning a 'vintage' vehicle!
think it DOES have a flame start device, most of the 2711e family of engines did. tilt the cab, and look where the air intake pipe meets the inlet manifold and if it is fitted there will be both a fuel feed pipe and an electric feed. the unit contains a coil which is heated electrically which in turn burns the diesel that is fed in as the engine cranks. if it IS fitted with this device then dont use easy start or such like. other than this, it could be a faulty non return valva in the fuel pump allowing the diesel to run back to the tank overnight.
yeah it is fairly easy to swap, but first check the basics like is the fuel supply getting to it ok or is the electric current getting through. wherever else i've seen a similar device fitted there has been a push button wired in to energise it. if memory serves in this case a relay controls this. any auto electricians out there with long memories who can help?
