Working with children in care homes

I really want to work with children in care homes as a change of career.
My Mum has advised me a little bit as she used to do this in her younger years but isnt sure how I would get into it these days as she sort of feel into it.
I'd like to be a key worker/support worker.
Does anybody have any information of where I might go to get started?
