does a sky+ box need to be connected to a telephone socket?

we are due to have sky+ installed soon, but on coming to check the telephone extension socket that we intended to use, have found that it does not work. does anyone know if its necessary to have a sky+ box connected to a telpehone socket? have tried sky's website but not much help. thanks

Yes - Sky refused to install their television services because I do not have a BT line.

Or any landline, for that matter.
