I love watching this but what is the badge Mac Taylor wears in his lapel, its got a D on it does this mean he is a detective?

I believe its a "family/relative of the 911 twin towers" badge that he wears in memory of his girlfriend/wife that was killed in one of the towers. He did explain it once and mentioned 911 and said that's why I wear that and pointed to it. It was also mentioned when he found the son of his dead wife/girlfriend - the son mentioned the badge and knew it was mac.
