Hi, an overseas relative was staying with me recently and unknown to me she used my car.She has since returned home. But the other day i received a letter saying my car had been flashed by a speed camera.Whereabouts do i stand,as i had not given my consent and she would not have been insured?
Hi, Although it is your car & the oversea's person was driving it, You cannot be done, It is up to you to prove that were not driving the car at the time. Good Luck. T.W.R.
And the authorities do check - they will want to know the dates she arrived in and left the UK and will contact her
There has been two reports to my knowledge of speeders being imprisoned for perverting the course of justice for claiming the car was driven by a foreign friend/relative.
One was quite funny as the keeper claimed the driver was a black Jamaican national - the photograph clearly showed it was a white man driving.
In the other case there was no records of the foreigner entering the country at the time.
So be sure to have as much relevant information as you possibly can .
relevant information could be shop receipts, credit card receipts, mobile phone bills, witnesses etc. that will show where you were when the alledged offence took place. Think also about reporting your relative to the police for 'taking without consent'.
