Police Stop
My friend got stoped today by the police. They said he had no insurance, he said he did have. When he got home and phoned the insurance company they said his monthly payment hadn't gone through. He has a certificate that says he has insurance, if he takes this to the police satation will they be able to tell if his monthly payment didnt go through? or will they just look at the certificate and see it is valid till July 08 and be ok with it? (Anyone know what the fine is for no insurance?)

i doubt they will just accept his certificate. Too many people have tried to get away without paying the full premiums required once they have certificate in their hands. If he didnt pay his premium he isnt insured.
Insurers give a few warnings before cancelling the insurance too, so he may well have known that it was already cancelled.

Be very careful... there is a specific offence (usually involving arrest) for fraudlent use of driving documents.... is a criminal conviction really worth the risk when he's probably looking at a fine and points only? Probably a cpouple of hundred quid for no insurance, but it will depend on his means.
The insurance comany will have kept a record of the fact taht he's now been told that his insurance is invalid and will happily provide a statement for the police.

I see plenty of coppers ringing us to check.
They search the MID (Motor Insurers Database) which logs who insures what car.
If it showed as negative, and you provide an insurance certificate, they will ring the insurer to check if it was valid at the time.
Needless to say, it wasn't.
However, I'd have to question why the insurance co didn't inform you that the payment rejected? We give our policyholder's notice by phone and letter if a payment rejects
