ok I have decided to make jam with my blueberries (blueberry jam I think they call it), but I think I MUST (must?) use gelatine with the sugar. I have recovered a pack of gelatine from my larder, but it looks like it must be 20 years old, no kidding. Is it still safe to use?
Given that gelatin comes from the boiled down remains of cow bones, gristle and other unsavory sinew, would have though that at 20 years old it will be well past its best.
Chuck it before it starts walking out the door and get some more. Preferable used the non- animal versions that are now available and work just as well.
Merry sweetie... you need to go back to the larder and find the packet that is called "pectin" NOT "gelatine" - it works much better.... However, you could always trundle down to shops and purchase fresh pack of pectin.... not too expensive either ! It will save on muscles anyway....
