I think generally both.... your washing machine should take some of the water from your hot water supply... although it wont be hot enough for most washes and it wont maintain its temperature during the wash... the machine therefore heates the water to the correct temperature and maintains it too.... hope this helps...
some machines are cold fill machines, check the manual to see if it says this, in which case it has to heat the water and takes longer to reach temperature.
think you'll find modern washing machines are now cold fill only. Have recently bought a new one & didn't find one whilst we were looking that was hot & cold fill.

someone does ;)

Most machines these days are cold fill only as this means that you are only heating the water needed for the actual wash, where as in a hot fill machine upto about half the water coming into the machine from the hot pipe would be cold anyhow, you have to run your hot tap for a while until hot water comes out, same thing the water in the pipe cools so you end up heating that water twice, copmbine this with the fact the water in your hot water tank needs replenishing and heating up you are heating that ammount of water 3 times.

For those of you that have a hot and cold fill machine you can buy a y adaptor so both hot and cold inlet takes in cold water to give the same effect
Just a thought for those out there on a water meter like me. Our hot water runs off almost 5 litres before it gets hot enough to wash up. I collect the run off in a clean 5 litre water bottle and feed it through the drawer in my washer to dissolve the powder better, save elecricity as it is lukewarm and to save on my water consumption/bill.

Every little helps....as they say !!!!
