Socks in the dark.

The electricity goes out, and your bedroom is pitch dark. Yet you still need to find a matching pair of socks! In your drawer are 25 white socks and 25 red socks. How many socks must you take out of the drawer before you get a matching pair?
 

 Not very good with these kinds of puzzles was wondering if you could give me some help.

Surely the answer is 3?  There are only two colours of sock, so if you take three you're bound to have at least two of the same colour.  (These are socks after all, not gloves - you don't have to have particular socks for your left and right feet!)

However I have to say that you should have paired them up as soon as they came off the washing line/out of the tumble drier!  You wouldn't wash them together, or you'd end up with pink socks!  Also, why would you have 25 of each?  That means you've got an odd one of each left over... is this some sort of trick question that's going to make me go "d'oh!" when I see the true answer??!

So, if you take out only two they will either be:
1) Two red, or
2) Two white, or
3) One white and one red, which if you wash will end up as a pair of pink!

Hmm!
