Golf GTI Unleaded Petrol have I done any damage ?
6 Answers
My September 2006 Golf GTI Mk5 has been filled up since then with unleaded petrol. Now done 2000 miles.
I have only just noticed the inside of the filler cap says Use Super Unleaded petrol only.
Do I tell the VW agent ( presumably it will it affect the warranty ?)
More important , have I done any harm as I have not yet used full power.

As others have said above, you won't have damaged your engine. The engines ECU will adjust for using "normal" unleaded (95 RON) fuel with no problem at all. They recommend using "Super" unleaded (usually 98RON) to give best performance and economy for that high performance engine in the GTI. They will probably have used 98RON when doing the official perfomance and economy tests so to get the perfromance and economy they say then you should use 98RON.
Same goes for my Volvo Turbo, says to use 98 RON but will accept 95RON OK. Get worse performance and economy using 95RON than using 98RON, but 98RON is this little bit dearer so it evens out in the long run (cost vs economy)
