It's called "Walking in the air" by Aled Jones

Heard recently that although Aled Jones sang the version that got released as a single, he did not actually sing the version on the animated film, but is regularly [incorrectly] credited with it.

That's right. The boy who sung on The Snowman was called Peter Auty. Aled Jones replaced him when it was released as a single and made a lot more money than the original person.

Not exactly. Both Peter Auty and Aled Jones' versions were released as singles, but Aled, being all famous and that, sold more.

It's walking in the air but there are two versions - the one from the film didn't sell as well and Aled Jones did better - most people think he sang the film one and he now presents songs of praise and is very chubby in the face and he's on come dancing too
