I think they were known as a Bath Oliver, which was a large unsweetened biscuit, that used to be kept in a large glass jar on pub counters and mainly bought for the dog that had come to the pub with you and was supposed to be taken for a walk. i.e a pint for the owner and a biscuit for the dog, thats how I remember them anyway.
