Waitrose, Sainsburys, Morrisons - none of them have even a single bottle of any variety of Branston Pickle.

Does anyone know when manufacture of this essential condiment will resume?

I thought production was supposed to have started again around about now - I presume Premier Foods would have concentrated on getting the Branston Pickle brand back into production first after the fire.

This is the last thing I read...

It's probably people panic buying that'* *** stocks. Can't be without Branston for the cold turkey on Boxing Day !!

Got some in ASDA last week.  This is the first I heard of a problem.

I've been censored !!

All the last bit said was"...panic   buying   that's   hit   stocks..."

Are supermarket own brands also affected?

I read a big advertisement in the paper last week, saying that 'Branston Pickle' is now being manufacured once again. I am so pleased, as it's the only one I like.

I didn't think anything would replace this beloved pickle until I tried Baxter's Victorian Chutney - and now would never  go back to Branstons.

our local paper carried an article about Branston Pickle last week, none of the big local supermarkets had any, but the smaller independant shops said they still had loads, so it might be worthwhile checking your little local stores out
Branston "Bring out the Branston!" pickle? Had some only last night. No problem getting it in Liverpool at least...
Cetti - I shall buy a jar of Baxter's Victorian Chutney & test it out on the family over Christmas - thanks.
I think other people have already said, but try Baxters Victorian Chutney.  It is brilliant !!!

Thanks for the answers - its too far for me to go to Liverpool for it, but perhaps supplies to the stores are resuming so I'll keep looking.

Cetti & Mairid: I've never heard of Baxters Victorian. Why is it better than Branston? Perhaps you can give a decription if it. -

Bring back Panyan, it was much better the Branston anyway.
Another vote here for Baxters Victorian, although at times the tartness of Branston's is a refreshing change.

As for what it is:

http://www.baxters.co.uk/products/chutney/003.html

It's sweeter than Branstons, but makes a mean ploughmans with some strong cheese.
A chef friend of mine has a huge jar which he is threatening to put on ebay!

I like the crunchy bits in Branstons, and I think its is quite sweet enough. If Baxters is even sweeter then I know I'm not going to like it.

Thanks for posting the link, ian.miller. Reading the ingredients it sounds just like the chutneys my Mum used to make from the cooking apples in our garden. Us kids were unappreciative  and wanted shop bought stuff.

Someone at work is advertising 1/2 jar of Branstons up for auction on our internal web site discussion group, with a starting price of  50, so Ebay might be a good idea.

No Pinotage it's not sweet, I wouldn't touch it if it was.

I've just taken the lid off and had a mighty sniff. Mmm, the smell is a mixture of a fragrant curry with a hint of orange, lemon and ground spices. There are enough lumps to satisfy your palate, but not the disgusting lumps of cauli or parsnip that appeared in lesser chutneys.

It just cries out for cheese, cold meat and just about anything else - so if you'll excuse me.....

Thanks to everyone.

I have good news - I popped into Waitrose this morning and there were three jars of Branston Original Pickle. I bought two (wanted to get all three but thought to leave one for some other sufferer).

When I see Baxters I'll give it a try, but it do think itss going to be too sweet, Cetti, ian.miller says sweeter than Branston and the ingredients imply it is; largest ingredient is Apple (which is sweet), sugar. Raisins are sweet, as are apricots and its got orange juice (?) in it ,also sweet. Sounds mucho sweeto.

Hmm, I'd say it was sweeter but then the curried smell so well described gives it it's strength, it's no marmalade!.

My favourite use is with one of those part baked baguettes. While still warm, no butter or marg, just Baxters and extra mature cheddar - heaven. In fact I might stop by Tesco's on the way home now!

I also love it with pate.
