My uncle was born about 70years ago with a veil over his face. I know this is some kind of skin covering the face but thats all. What is it and what causes it? Is it common now?

Its known as a Caul snappy and its a thin piece of membrane,harmless and considered very lucky. Sailors would take a baby's caul to sea with them and maybe still do!

My Mum still has the one I was born with 45 years ago. A sailor friend offered her �10 for it then (don't know what it would be worth now), but I don't know if modern sailors are still that superstitious. It is said that if you have one, you will never die by drowning.

slightly off message, but i was recently reading a book in which is was said that a caul represented wisdom. it was a work of fiction, but the sentiment seemed to be based in folk-lore.   xx
