Phantom drives

After installing a new cd-rom drive the computer has thrown up a phantom drive. this drive is labelled J: it does not relate to a physical drive, is unusable but is slowing things down. How can I get rid of it. I'm using windows 95. Only thing I can find about it is that in device manager it says it is using ms-dos compatability.

First, remove the new cd-rom drive to see if everything returns to normal. If it does, reinstall the drive. Later versions of Windows 9x do not require any cd-rom drivers for IDE cd-roms, just plug them in. So, if you installed any drivers, try removing them. If this doesn't work, the only time that I have seen a phantom drive, the solution was to obtain an updated driver for the on board IDE controller.
