with help from this site I have virtually finished the crossword - except for 30d - kundun or tundun?
and also while i understand the 23 & 56 direction do no tunderstand the theme that ties the words together - can anyone help?

Tundun

The 2nd & 3rd Letters of each unclued word are the same as the 5th & 6th letters ....23 therefore = 56

The above clue is an example tUNdUN

Thanks K - I understood the 23 & 56 direction and have completed the grid but wondered if the words were linked by a them other than the letters' positioning

I have those 3 answers.

There is no theme other than the 23/56 which you are familiar with.

I thought it was an unsatisfactory crossword set by a usually reliable compiler. Just an off day maybe.

I won't even be around tomorrow to see if that one is any better.
