Athenae, I think you are being a bit harsh on sarumite.
On a personal level I try to do a/any crossword in one hit, i.e. not put it to one side for another day. My process is to fill in the answers I know, this sometimes means I can fill in a crossing clue. The I turn to books (I have about 12' feet of reference books). Then, for the unanswered, I turn to Google, ignoring answers on the answerbank. Not showing off, but this means that I will normally have finished "the generalist" in one to two hours. I after that time I have not finished the crossword then, and only then, would I turn to the answerbank.
Who is to say that JBW123 was not in a similar position?
And at what point in the sequence of looking in reference books, using Google and then using the answerbank does the search for an answer become "pathetic"?
However, that said, I agree giving a clue to a clue might be a more "elegant" way of helping people.
Each to their own.....
