The gaols would have to be run under British law and to the same standards and inspected in the same way.
And there's a bit of an issue in terms of relatives visiting rights.
That could be overcome with a bit of creativity - prisoners who agreed to be transferred overseas might be eligable for a 10% reduction in sentence etc.
There'd be a lot of travelling expenses with securely transporting prisoners and other staff and that might end up costing more.
This rings bells though - wasn't it briefly considered and rejected by some Government years ago?

I have not been inside. So all the reports of luxury conditions are pure bull are they? Tell me hand on heart there is no SKY TV no snooker tables, no drugs. All made up by the nasty right wing and prison officers.
Ok ABers, who's been inside, tell me about it.
Sorry response tomorrow got to go and slop out!

Outsourcing seems to be a bad idea in most businesses (think of having to ring call centres in Balgalore, or for that matter the crap catering in my office canteen since it went private) but as long as the rules are obeyed it should make no difference. But can it be that you're recommending something like rendition flights, where the USA sent suspects to countries where torture is practised, because it didn't want to torture them themselves? So a private company would be allowed to mistreat prisoners in a way the government isn't?
