Explain my memory!

Hello. I have a memory from my childhood that I would love to find more out about. I heard something on Radio 1 (i'm in the UK) when I was maybe about 13 (1989) and had a little moment where I promised myself that i'd never forget what I just heard. A news bulletin came on, where the reporter spoke of fighter jets, possibly over South America, came into direct contact with flying saucers. It was reported as possible first contact with aliens, but in a far from sensationalist way. In hindsight, the memory seems increasingly implausable, and as a dyed in the wool skeptic fully aware of the fallability of memory, I can only assume that it's a lot of invention wrapped in a small seed of truth somewhere - a misunderstanding of an actual event put through years of mental chinese whispers, if you like. I'd like to know if anyone has any ideas of what I might actually be remembering.
