I had to take early retirement on health grounds from my employment in local government and was given a small pension based on service, I am now of retirement age and have not claimed my state pension, my question is how will these pensions affect each other?.

There is the possibility that if your local government service was a long time ago (before 1980 or thereabouts) then that pension will be reduced by a small amount (and I do mean a small amount - I think 1.70 a year for each year of service prior to that date) when you become eligible for the state pension. You may not remember but you paid reduced NI at the time if this affects you.
