You are referring to the supercranes used to build large skyscrapers... Notice that these cranes have a collar at the bottom of the box-frame lattice structure of the vertical part of the crane. This collar functions as a wench and lifts (slides) the entire crane above it upward so that the next section of the crane can be inserted and attached. When needed the next section is just inserted and the crane can grow as the building does.
