Car boot sales

I'm doing my first car boot sale on Sunday and I've no idea what to charge for things! I know people expect things for nothing so I'm prepared for people haggling but I've no idea where to start with prices. Am I better putting prices on or not?

I've got things like books, shoes, adults clothing and baby clothing to get rid of. What is the going rate for these kinds of things?

i would definately price everything. Think about how you would feel if you were buying - the seller could just make up a price on the spot - personally, that always puts me off. A simple sticky label will show that you have thought about what you want. Also, if you are selling good clean stuff, you may get pounced on as you are setting up. Labelling the night before means you won't have to think of a price whilst flustered.
As the day goes on and you are left with things, you can pop a sticker over them or make a "everything half price" poster.
It really depends on whether it's a one off. If you are doing the sale because you want to get rid, then price very reasonably. You will find that people will buy more from you - and probably come back after seeing the other stalls that are over charging.
I recently paid �3 for a girl's coat, �1.50 for a boy's m&s jumper and �2 for a leather handbag.
My son sold his light sabers recently - he wanted �3 each. Many people came and looked, but walked away.
He made a little sign "�3 each or two for a fiver" and he sold all of them within half an hour.
I would also say think about how much you paid originally and the condition. You may find that the other stall holders will buy a lot of your stuff, to sell on at a dearer price. But, in my experience, they are the ones who will still be with it at the end of the day, carting it back home again!

Personally I think that labelling everything is too much like hard work. I would just make signs, like baby clothes �2, baby clothes, �3 (you could have two separate piles). Also depending on how much you want to get rid of your stuff depends on how much you charge. Charging �2 a book will find that you will be bringing most of them back home, charging 50p will mean that you sell more of them.

And the 25p each or 5 for a �1 always works for me (prices used as a example)

I tend to look at stalls what have things laid out nicely too. Takes a bit of time but you will sell more. Don;t mix the clothing either. have vests with vests, trousers with trousers etc and keep them sexed as well :)

Thank you all for your advice. We're moving house in 3 weeks so the idea is to get rid of a load of stuff before we move so we don't have to find somewhere for it!

Good tip about pricing the night before, I think that's what I'll do. I was thinking of doing books at �1 each or 3 for �2. I'll make sure to put baby vests etc together, that's a good idea too and just have one price for each pile.

Hi miss! I would'nt bother pricing things up. Just ask what 'you' would be prepared to pay if you were on the other side of the stall. If they want to haggle, agree if you think it reasonable, if you don't, stick to your guns! You will also get sellers from other stalls trying to get a stealearly on, be warned, they will want stuff cheap xxx
