Help with things being thrown at cars

I recently found my car had had a large clump of mud thrown at the windscreen and also my b/f's car had been targetted (only two cars in entire road that had stuff thrown at them) and had dog faeces thrown at the windscreen. Although we didn't see it happen we're pretty sure we know who did it. It's been reported to the police who advise that they can't log it as a crime as there was no damage. If this keeps happening and there is never any damage done then can it ever be a crime - I would've thought its technically vandilism. Any help on how to pursue this would be great as I'm pretty sure it's going to happen again so will keep an eye on the cars but even if we do catch someone in the act not sure if police will ever do anything.

i woul ring up the pc who dealt with your complaint and explain that criminal damage does not have to be permanent , it's like chalking on the pavement the rain washes it away but if you get caught by police / council you get a fine , so in theory it's the same or if you throw an egg at a vehicle and causes no damage the police like to charge you with criminal damage wot to the egg ??
well you are both wrong and the police it is a ...a.s.b.o. order you nead find out who it is and..report it...

as for police ...they all are a waiste of money ...filling in forms comes to mind ....carnt be bothered !.....

in the 60s and 70s and 80s police were respected ...now they are a joke !

as for your last comment .....think it will be you in the wrong for grabing hold of him......

why dont you just leave them to it ...think thats what the police would like ...and if they smash or steal it ...police will just give you a crime number .......

thats the police in the year 2008
If your car is parked directly outside your house (and can be seen from the windows) I would set up a small CCTV camera in the window (but where it won't be seen by people walking past) and hooked up to your video recorder. Miniature wireless cameras can be picked up quite cheaply. It's a long shot but you may be able to capture the culprit on camera.

Even if we do capture who it is on tape what will the police do - absolutely nothing. Even at best if they do give them an asbo that won't get us anywhere. We'll just have given them even more reason to wreck our cars or possibly even our house, which I'm now thinking could possibly happen.
Viky, having proof is better than having none at all. You'd have more chance of the police acting upon it - especially if the culprit is a known offender. What is the alternative? Sit back and do nothing and let these mindless vandals make a misery of your lives?

As a matter of interest, up until about three years ago we had a similar problem in our street, with a particular gang of kids who got some sort of kick out of smashing wing mirrors off cars. A lot of the neighbours got fed up with it and installed CCTV cameras (some have chosen large cameras because they want the vandals to be aware that their cars are being monitored) and I can honestly say this has acted as a deterrent... Well, put it one way, we've had no problems in three years. I'm sorry that you don't feel that this would work for you.
Have you upset any neighbourhood dogs? Forensics now have the technology to tell what breed the faeces belongs to. From my experience it's usually Alsations or Jack Russell Terriers.
you carnt put a camera up and point it into the street ???
you will be made to take it down ... or point it to your door only...keep up with the law...

in the year 2008 crimanals have rights ...the common man has nothing...only a crime number......

as the person said were will she go with the proof ???

and the law states you have to inform public you have a cctv in action ... on window or door or wall.....

just like if you have a guard dog you have to inform public you have one....PEFETIC IF YOU ASK ME !!!!!!!
