I think it's harder to find an unusual boys name than a girls. Needless to say, he didn't get his way and our son has a nice name that isn't strange, but not overly popular either.
Yeah I liked Dante too 4get, but somehow it doesn't seem right on a boy brought up in the depths of Lancashire. I also liked Lucien until my ex became stuck on it and wouldn't go with anything else - and I think it sounds a bit pretentious. Looking at my litle boy now, don't think either would suit him!
For a rare, but not unique, name what about Jorrel? (It's also spelt Jorel, Jorrel and Jorell). I know an 8-year-old with this name. His mum calls him Jo most of the time - but it's Jorrel when he's being naughty ;-)
(The name appears to be derived from the name of Superman's father, in the Marvel comics).
If your friend wants something genuinely unique, it might be worth looking at a few foreign language dictionaries. For example, Lindo is Spanish for 'handsome' or 'perfect'. Feliz is Spanish for 'happy' , 'fortunate' or 'lucky'. Vida is Spanish for 'life'. (The Italian version is Vita).
