if i sign up for the standard membership, 9.95 for 6 months, does this mean that i can look at original census records for free instead of paying 5.00 for 50 credits? its just a little confusing...just started to research my family history.

I don't know if they have a new set of prices on there but it only costs me 9.95 per year, although I do have to pay extra to look at census and birth/death records (5.00 for 50 credits as you mentioned). Admittedly I haven't been on Genes Reunited for a while (about 3 months or so) so I have no idea if they've made any price changes.

I have just renewed my membership on GR and it is 9.95 for 1 year. I have been a member for a few years now and have made some amazing contacts, the best one being a 2nd cousin whose grandfather was the brother of my
grandmother, and when I met him I was astonished how like my mother he looked.
You can check census records and all other records on the LDS site which is www.familysearch.com, and which is free to access. They have records for all over the world.
I wish you success with your searching.

Don't spend any money to buy credit on GR, they are expensive and you can get them cheaper elsewhere. You still have to pay your 9.95 for 6 months though, this just allows you to use the message boards and to contact other members.
The LDS site as mentione above has the 1881 census for free, plus baptisms and marriages from early 1500's upto c1870's although these are not complete.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk has births, marriages and deaths from 1837 upto about 1930 although again, not yet complete.
http://www.ancestry.co.uk has BMDs, all censuses and loads more info, that costs about 70 for a year (or you can pay monthly or buy credits) and in my opinion, is the best website and absolutely essential if you are serious.
