I was walking my dog over the field behind my house and I bumped into my elderly neighbour and her three dogs. We got chatting while the dogs ran around and then one decided to lay down on the floor on her side panting a bit. I thought she'd worn herself out running around and said 'Aahh, look at her, she's had enough, bless her. Little did I know how true that statement would turn out to be.
When it was time to go, the dog wouldn't get up. We tried all sorts of things to encourage her but she was having none of it. Turns out the poor dog was dying right there in front of us. Between us my neighbour and I managed to carry her home. About ten minutes later the dear little doggy finally passed away. That was the bad bit.
I just happened by sheer fluke (I'm never usually up the field at that time of day) to be in the right place at the right time and my neighbour didn't have to deal with the loss of her beloved pet alone. I am so glad I was there to help and comfort her and aid her in dealing with the practicalities of the situation. That was the good bit; the fact that I had been there for my neighbour at a time it was most important that she wasn't alone.
Just two hours later my neighbour was at my door handing me a bunch of flowers to say thank you. I was deeply touched to think that while she must have been grief stricken she had almost immediately gone to the trouble of buying me flowers. It was the last thing I was expecting , there was no need and she really shouldn't have. But it was a lovely gesture and very much appreciated.
