The new generation of straightners are very different to the ones used in the 80's and 90's. They are hotter, but do require less time on the hair to achieve a great result. The very important thing to remember, is to use a heat protection product before you straighten, and then use a balm or small amount of wax to set the style. I had the same problem as you, where the mere hint of weather and my hair would go back to normal, until my hairdresser said that the wax would protect the style and keep the hair straight for longer.
As for using the wet2straight, i wouldn't trust it. These straightners are not really great for your hair, but using them to dry your hair sounds like you're asking for trouble.
What i would say to the person who has burnt themselves using the straigtners, is that they should get an adult to help them next time, and thus avoid accidents.
